WHAT DO WE MEAN BY SOUTHERN HEP COLLECTIVE?
SOUTHERN:
The Collective consists of Higher Education in Prison programs across 14 southeastern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia.
"Higher Education" includes a broad spectrum of post secondary educational programming (including vocational certifications) within a variety of models (for credit and not-for-credit courses, degree and non-degree programs).
"Prison" encompasses a variety of carceral settings and extends to programs serving both currently and formerly incarcerated people.
HEP:
COLLECTIVE:
Members of the collective operate programs on an individual basis but are committed to collective action in the form of information-sharing and strategizing to improve programming and student support and increase through policy and advocacy across the South.
